String Cheese Incident loses Billy Nershi

P1010091.JPG

Billy Nershi has made plans to leave String Cheese Incident sometime during 2007…

After summer 2007, Billy Nershi is leaving The String Cheese Incident to pursue other musical projects. There will be only a limited number of Incidents between now and then. Current plans include Thanksgiving in Atlanta, a New Years Eve blowout in San Francisco, Winter Carnival in Colorado, and a return to Red Rocks. Presently, there are no plans for The String Cheese Incident beyond summer of 2007.

The band would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our friends and fans for all your support.

Because most everyone in the band already has a side-project to fall back on, I highly doubt they’ll try to continue on past this. Nershi was an anchor for this band and he’d be hard to replace…

  1. I’ve seen SCI A LOT, dating back to early 1997. 98% of the shows I saw were between 1997 and 2002, and I have seen MAYBE 4 shows between 2002 and 2006. The thing I have noticed lately is that Nershi could not look more bored playing hippy-trance. Sure, he jumps around and is goofy like he always has, but he doesn’t put out the energy he used to. There was a time when Nershi drove SCI. Now he’s just along for the ride. The Vegoose latenight set was quite possibly among the most boring of SCI shows I’ve seen, despite the stage show and covers. I really see no loss, in general, to Nershi’s departure, and SCI’s demise has been impending for some time. I really don’t think anyone is surprised by this, and I wish them all success in the future.

  3. Phish-gone. Cheese-soon to be gone. To me these two bands have always epitomized the jamband scene and now they aren’t even around anymore. Cheese have always been my boys and they will be greatly missed. But I agree, its better for cheese to go out with flying colors then to keep dragging on. Noone could ever match Cheese or the parties that they threw and they will be greatly missed.

But it would be absolutely insane if keller took over full time.

  5. i agree with bunson there.. i saw alot of early cheese…pretty much spent a good part of life followin them and it has changed alot…and billy is such an amazing bluegrass flat picker, u could see how that super crazy pickin, sending you into a dancing frenzy, has been replaced with synths and space funk.. all i can say is i hope the best for all them…and wow what a ride ..i hope to see him pickin more with the likes of drew emmitt band and other fine bluegrass pickers.. but as the famous line goes…” this has all been wonderful , but now im on my way” ..

  7. Drag… what more can one say?

Well, how ’bout “Thanx for everything!” and “Good luck!”

After all, you were “just passin’ thru”, eh?

See you in Atlanta, both nights. I’ll be the one down front with the big grin on my face… Oh, wait…

  9. I think it would be cool if Keller started to play full time, but i highly doubt that would happen. He has his own music career going on, why would he drop what he has going to join a band, thats not “one of his own” Yes, he’ll probably play a few shows with them but i think if Keller were to stay Nershi would somewhat be forgotten. Good luck Nershi in your days with out Cheese.

  11. There should be a ground swell of cheese-heads for a write in campaign to draft Keller into the Cheese. This summer the KWI show at 10KLF was absolutely awsome. In some ways Keller’s appreciation of trippy grooves and looping really is a better fit for the direction the band has been going than Nershi’s flat-picking style anyway.

  13. Hello all, this blog is new to me… but wanted to throw in my 2 cents

So, I enjoyed late night vegooe 05 immensely (actually that’s putting it lightly)… but I must admit this years set list didnt look all that mind blowing.
I’m sad to see Billy leave the group, not too sure how I feel about Cheese post Nershi but one thing is for sure, i’ll be in San Francisco this NYE. Gotta get my fill before this train comes to a stop.

on a side note – I wonder how many Keller petition’s were going to see in S.F.?
