Nominations for the 2013 GRAMMY Awards were released tonight and Indie-rock trio Fun., breakout R&B/hip-hop star Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, and Mumford & Sons scored the most Grammy Award nominations, each getting six nods mostly in the top Grammy categories. In a change from previous years (the first four nomination shows were held in L.A., The Recording Academy announced the nominations Wednesday during a show in Nashville (Music City, USA), a nod to the city’s increasingly diverse music scene (Jack White, The Black Keys and indie favorites such as JEFF The Brotherhood and PUJOL call Nashville home).
NOTABLES: 2011 CMJ darlings and word-of-mouth sensations Alabama Shakes received nods for Best Rock Performance and Best New Artist.
– After cleaning house at the 2012 awards, Skrillex received nominations for Best Dance Recording and Best Dance Album.
– No New Orleans artist was nominated in Best Regional Roots Music Album, a category that went to Rebirth Brass Band in 2012.
– Carly Rae Jepsen is nominated for Song of the Year – is this the single-catchiest, poppiest, most one-hit wonder-y song ever to receive a nod (and potentially win) this category?
– Jack White is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for Blunderbuss and Best Rock Song for “Freedom at 21”, adding to the highly-stacked list of nominees for White in addition to his nods/wins with The White Stripes, The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs.
– M83’s epic Double-LP Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming (released in 2011) is nominated for Best Alternative Music Album – snowboarders, music supervisors and Victoria’s Secret models everywhere rejoice.
– Robert Glasper is nominated in the Best R & B Album category, despite clearly being a jazz artist. Either way, Glasper is an modern innovator in whatever space he occupies and completely deserving of notoriety from The Recording Academy.
– The Best Folk Album category is stacked and includes Carolina Chocolate Drops, Luther Dickinson and Chris Thile, Yo-Yo Ma & Edgar Meyer’s amazing Goat Rodeo Sessions record.
– Tenacious D is nominated for Best Comedy Album.
The 55th Grammy Awards take place Feb. 10 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
