Live Bloggin’ the Jammys

So, if you’re like me, it’s just a normal Thursday night in whatever you city you happen to be in. I’m actually going to watch Survivor in a little bit. That’s right, jealous?

If you’re living in New York City, you just might be one of the lucky individuals attending this year’s Jammy Awards (currently underway as I write this post).

I’m extremely pleased to tell you that I’ve got some live updates from the event coming straight in from both Andy Gadiel and Ryan from Fresh Bread (affectionately known around here as bready), and I’m sure they’re having a blast and enjoying some great music right now.

  1. Just got back…pretty good show, worth every penny, although not the best Jammys in history.

My favorite moment of the night? Mickey gives this passionate speech about how our biggest threat isn’t Iran and Iraq, or this s***ty administration, it’s global warming. Global warming is reeeeal, man. And there’s a great movie coming out, you all should go see it…it’s called, um, well, I don’t remember the name of it, but go see it, Al Gore made it. Pretty classic stuff right there.

Jake sat in at the end of the Zappa set, and it was INCREDIBLE. Jake and Dweezil went back and forth and eventually the dueling solos led to a fairly serious prog-rock orgiastic climax. The Aiko Aiko (not Woman are Smarter as Gadiel reported) in the Rhythm Devils (with Cactus et al) set was pretty sweet too, going back into the Jingo that they weaved in and out. Frampton was very cool to see, although they had him playing with Guster, who was not very good. Did he talk with a guitar? Oh yeah. The Cortez the Killer from Grace Potter with Satriani and Kimock was the first “wow, this is a cool gig” moment of the night. She’s great stuff in the making. McCoy Tyner, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and Savion Glover tap dancing — very cool chemistry. Some other moments of import, but I can’t remember. I do remember that the members of Widespread Panic won free Vonage service for life for winning an award they sponsored. Why announce that? And why does WSP need free Vonage for life? You think Schools is using the Internet to talk on a house phone? Can you even picture him on the phone?

I took some videos, I’m gonna post ’em on my site some time tomorrow. And hey, any show involving Manute Bol has to be awesome.

  3. Ace: thanks for providing some quick insight after the show.

Frampton with Guster-ho hum, I guess…but DO YOU FEEL would have been worth the ticket price alone…

WTF about Widespread winning free Vonage for life…that’s just crazy!

  5. The Frampton was great actually…he really can still play. Woke up this mornin’, with a wine glass in my haaand.

Forgot to mention, the Richie Havens with Mutaytor opening was fantastic. Great to see a Woodstock legend, and that Mutaytor band is pretty cool, percussion comin out the wazoo…

And I definitely undersold moe. last night by not mentioning them. moe. is really it right now — to me they’re the only band out there that can carry any semblence of a torch from the VT Boys. Every time I see them they put on a sick show, and last night’s abbreviated set was no different. Talk about a band that has it and gets it, moe. is clearly on top right now.

I’m telling you, the Mickey Hart movie thing was off the charts priceless. The fire and passion with which this guy spoke was great, until he just forgot what he was talkin about. Then people just started laughing at him. Classic.

Good show, and as I said last night, worth every single penny.

  7. Unfortunately missed the Richie Havens opener but the rest of the night was consistently great – the quality of the jamming, which is what its supposed to be all about, was really outstanding. Bela and the boys were just grooving with McCoy Tyner and Savion, that kicked. Grace Potter’s Cortez was great though she left out a verse which would have made it even longer and better. The Zappa set was very crisp and appropriately weird, not overdone at all. I thought the only weak song of the night was the Guster tune, though it was quickly forgotten when Frampton played – I thought they did a good job backing him up, and he was smoking. Enjoyed all the rest too – Rhythm Devils and the Feat/Marley combination. Always a fun night, was pleasantly surprised to see so many hot young babes rocking out though. What can they come up with for next year???
