Chris Cornell was laid to rest at Hollywood Forever Cemetery yesterday in a ceremony attended by his family and many of his music colleagues, all gathering to pay tribute and respect to the rocker’s tragic suicide. Attendees were greeted with a program declaring “We are neighbors in a modern world where proximity is relative and the threshold to our hearts moves outside time and space.” and saw a gravestone marked as “Voice as our generation and an artist for all time”.

Metallica’s James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Taylor Hawkins, Pharrell Williams, Krist Novoselic, Nile Rodgers, Courtney Love, Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro and Joe Walsh were among the rockers who attended the funeral, with actors like James Franco, Christian Bale and Brad Pitt also in attendance.

Musically they paid tribute to work from Chris Cornell’s solo work as well as his other projects, and Chester Bennington from Linkin Park performed Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”

Four large portraits of Cornell were on display on a dais where Morello, actor Josh Brolin and the rocker’s Soundgarden bandmates Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron delivered eulogies under overcast skies at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Reading about the ceremony really makes you realize how many important people his life and music touched. For many of us he was the defining character of what grunge culture represented, maybe even more than Kurt Cobain especially considering how much longer Cornell was with us, and with that changed music as we know it. It’s very clear his music and presence on stage will be missed for years to come.
