When John Oates welcomed Brittany Howard, the powerhouse lead vocalist of the Alabama Shakes to the stage, the first major surprise of the “Rock & Soul Superjam” was met with a deafening roar of excitement. At age 24 Brittany was not only the youngest member of the Superjam band but also returning Bonnaroo royalty following her triumphant performance the previous year with the Shakes on the same stage. That gig also proved to be a major coming out party for her and her bandmates.
