Watch Dead and Company perform “Deep Elem Blues” from the Little Caesar’s Arena show that’s now available to stream!
This venerable country blues song about a legendary Dallas neighborhood dates back to the 1930s and has been recorded many times by a diverse range of artists including Doc Watson, Jerry Lee Lewis and even a pre-electric Les Paul (under the pseudonym “Rhubarb Red”). It also turned up very early in Grateful Dead history – or pre-history, as there are recordings of Jerry Garcia performing it in his days as a budding folkie, in a duo with his first wife, Sara Ruppenthal – and was frequently included in the Dead’s acoustic sets in 1970 and the early 80s. This performance in Detroit was Dead & Company’s first live shot at the tune, and they nailed it, with Bob Weir, Oteil Burbridge and John Mayer each taking a turn at lead vocal.
