To close down another stellar Outside Lands weekend, I carried a NOLA Jazz Fest tradition over to the Bay Area by finishing off the festival weekend with an epic burner of a Dumpstaphunk Superjam at The Independent. John Oates and Jon Cleary joined the best funk band in the land for a good majority of the show and guest spots by Nicki Bluhm and Trombone Shorty both received rave responses from the crowd (for very good reason). There were also appearances by Lukas Nelson and actors Craig Robinson and John Stamos.
Musical highlights were aplenty throughout the absurdly locked-in set and standouts included “One Nation Under A Groove,” a really compelling and interesting take on The Rolling Stones disco classic “Miss You,” The Meters’ “The World Is A Little Bit Under The Weather,” “Get Out of My Life, Woman,” “Everything I Do Has Got to Be Funky” and a number of new tracks from Dumpsta’s brand new LP Dirty Word. There wasn’t a single dull moment to be had or any breather songs to take a bathroom break, instead it was over two hours of relentless, hard-hitting, high quality double-bass funk.
These guys (and girl) just keep getting better every single time and you’d be hard-pressed to find a more fun Dumpstaphunk outing than the one I was lucky enough to attend last night. Check out a few of my photos from the superjam below.
