With anticipation of his 6th album, Outer Peace, releasing this Friday (Jan 18), Toro y Moi kicked off his tour this week in the Bay Area and booked two nights at The Fillmore to introduce a new layer of electronic sounds and upbeat funk that contrasts from his previous more mellow, dream-like songs that made him known as the quintessential chill wave artist.
Dressed all in white, Toro y Moi, moniker for Chaz Bear (formerly Bundick), reflects off bright colors in a haze of dreamy fog as he dances across the stage, pairing vocals to beats that the crowd can’t but help move to. Included in his performance were some new songs, such as “Ordinary Pleasure”, “Freelance”, “Who am I”, “Laws of the Universev, which Chaz has recently made available on NPR.
Performing in San Francisco for a total of two nights, Toro y Moi will then move on to play at sold out shows across the states, and then to UK and France. And the talents of Toro y Moi doesn’t stop there – he has also collaborated with the opener at the Fillmore show I saw, Bay Area band, Tanukichan, on writing and producing their album.
