Avey Tare of Animal Collective played in Philly last weekend in support of his new album at the PhilaMOCA. Avey called on some of his Animal Collective band mates for support in the lineup which featured frequent collaborator and guitarist Deakin and sit-in drummer from the last AC tour who did a great job at filling in for Panda Bear on drums, Jeremy Hyman.
The PhilaMOCA was a smaller sweaty space with an arthouse vibe, which fit the night of weird music perfectly. And the Animal Collective crew isn’t one to rely on their past hits for their live shows, instead choosing to explore their new sounds, and this show was no different. The set was all from his new release Cows on Hourglass Pond, save a reworked version of “When You Left Me” and “Heads Hammock” from his earlier work.
In between the slippery segues and fadeouts, the songs burst through with Avey’s childlike frantic energy, his supporting members always keeping the pace.
Next Avey will venture out West before finishing the tour up down south. With he and Panda Bear’s solo tour wrapping up soon, and talk of Animal Collective heading back in the studio, we should expect another album from them by the end of 2019 or early in 2020.
