Over the weekend, Steve Ellison aka Flying Lotus, tweeted a quick video clip of himself, frequent collaborator Thundercat and jazz-icon Herbie Hancock goofing around at the legend’s studio. Although such a short clip, comments made by Flying Lotus last year about a project he wasn’t allowed to mention yet may be bubbling to the surface. If the three musicians do intend on making music together it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Flying Lotus’ last album Until Quiet Comes has jazz elements throughout and he’s also the great-nephew of the late jazz pianist Alice Coltrane, and her husband / saxophonist John Coltrane. Add that to the way in which Herbie has pioneered jazz and mixing genres and we very much hope this wasn’t a one-and-done encounter.
