โEverything I do has heat, but this time I focused that feeling in very specific ways,โ Walden says. โI wanted people to feel a warm vibe from the beginning to the end. It recalls the time I had the hit โFreeway of Loveโ with the great Aretha Franklin โ that was played on radios throughout the summer. Youโd go on the beach and hear it. Iโm taking you back to that spirit with this album.โ
Still Yours For the Summer is Waldenโs most ambitious and diverse album yet โ the songs seamlessly blend disco, R&B, reggae, Afrobeat, Latin rhythms, jazz, rock and more. โIโm letting Godโs cosmic energy come through me. Iโm not blocking anything out,โ Walden says. โI traveled through the universe and landed here to make music with my beautiful band. When you listen to this album, you can go on the same adventure!โ
The ride blasts off with โI Love My People Now,โ a red-hot metal/hip-hop anthem guaranteed to get pulses racing. โI was inspired by seeing Kendrick Lamar rocking a crowd in Germany,โ Walden says. โI took that hardcore energy and brought it to the studio.โ Responding to Waldenโs own supercharged vocals is a rousing choir comprised of Cornell โCCโ Carter, Katie Walden, Kristie Isaacson, Edie Walden and Alex Walden-Kaufman, along with Gerry, Della June and Kayla Bundle. The tune percolates with Ralphe Armstrongโs stunning bass playing, and that virtuoso guitar shred comes courtesy of Vernon โIceโ Black.

โDance Till Sunriseโ is a sensuous Afrobeat dance gem that Walden wrote while drawing inspiration from the Bahamas and Jamaica. โI wanted to touch all the beautiful people down there,โ he says. โHereโs a song to relax, have some drinks, get in your bathing suits and swim with the dolphins.โ The mid-song rap is performed by the American-Nigerian singer Double O, and the song also features a vibey sax solo by Eddie Minnifield, known to fans across the globe for his work with Prince and Shelia E.
Another standout is โJump Up,โ which lives up to its name in every way. Powered by crackling, funky guitar rhythms of ace six-stringerย Cam Perridgeย and the rock-steady bass work byย Angeline Saris, itโs a euphoric dance blitz that wonโt be denied. Walden calls the track โhappiness all the way thatโs ready-made for the NBA courts.โ For the past few years, heโs mentored a promising young singer namedย Ivan, and on โJump Up,โ the 11-year-old star turns in a doozy of a rap. โIvanโs got the goods like few other talents Iโve known,โ Walden says. โThe whole world will know him soon enough.โ
The sweeping title track begins as an aching ballad, with Waldenโs poignant vocals floating overtop Justus Dobrinโs elegant piano accompaniment. Then the sky opens and the song crackles with fiery soloing by superstar guitarist (and Waldenโs onetime Journey bandmate) Neal Schon. โWhat can I say about Neal?โ Walden says. โThereโs never a minute where he doesnโt play his butt off. He and I have this connection โ Iโll sing him a melody and heโll let his guitar cry back to me.โ
The buzz on Still Yours For the Summer began with its first single, an effervescent reimagining of Sly Stoneโs โHot Fun in the Summertime,โ which Walden dedicated to the legendary music genius who passed away this year. Whereas the original 1969 hit conjured laid-back summer bliss, Waldenโs idea of vacation jubilation is built around a driving disco beat and shimmering, vibrant strings that evokes โ70s dance floor nostalgia while simultaneously sounding every bit in the present.
Waldenโs next single was a complete change of pace โ the ultra-funky R&B winner โBougie Cherry Bomb.โ Explaining the inspiration for songโs title, Walden credits his wife and co-writer, Katie. โShe was inspired by our son, Michael, who saw a picture of a cherry bomb,โ he says. โKatie jumped on that and added โbougie,โ which she thought made it a cool thing โ it meant high class.โ Walden describes the song as โhaving a bit of a Bruno Mars vibe, the way he can pay homage to an earlier time of funk, but heโs still right now. I do the same thing โ I love mixing the two worlds.โ
He brought his own worlds together โ and turns in a bravura vocal performance โ on โI Shoulda Loved Ya 2025,โ a state-of-the-art pop-funk remake of Waldenโs disco hit from his 1979 album,ย The Dance of Life. Angeline Sarisโ arresting basslines and Waldenโs stylish drumming form the basis of an irrepressible dance jam. The track also featuresย Jackson Allenย on guitar and Justus Dobrin on keys and programming. Renowned Italian hitmakerย Lino Nicolosi, a frequent collaborator with Walden, remixed the track and added guitar and percussion, while his brother and production partner Pino added piano and Hammond B3 organ.
On two cuts โ the soaring instrumental โMahavishnuโ (featuring incandescent guitar work by Vernon โIceโ Black) and the spoken-word โI Dreamt of Mahavishnuโ โ Walden honors his mentor, guitarist John McLaughlin, who hired him to play drums for the jazz-fusion supergroup Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early โ70s. โI canโt wait for him to hear these tracks,โ Walden says. โWithout John McLaughlin, I donโt know where I would be right now. Sometimes you just need that one person to change everything for you.โ
The record concludes with the Latin-flavored banger โGodโs Love is Gonna Take Us There,โ which Walden says came about โbecause God said, โYou need to write something about the Lord.โ Go out and inspire people with energy.โ So I did.โ
Production of Still Yours For the Summer took place at Waldenโs San Rafael-based Tarpan Studios as well as Nicolosi Studio in Milan, Italy. Walden, who sang lead vocals, played drums and keyboards, cites the special contributions of Associate Producer โLieutenantโ Cornell CC Carter โ โmy right hand in choosing the materialโ โ along with engineer and mixer Jim โJim Jamโ Reitzel.
โI canโt wait to let this album out into the world,โ Walden says. โPeople need to feel something positive โ with electricity and Godโs love. You can party to this record, and you can mellow out to it. It takes you on a trip through the solar system and back again.โ
