Trey Anastasio has captured sunshine in a bag and you can hear what that sounds like now that Red has released a Soundcloud of his take on the Gorillaz classic “Clint Eastwood”. This unique look at the tune (now over a decade old, where does the time go?) is the kind of new life-infusing kinda cover (Anastasio has had it in the live repertoire for awhile now) that can turn the heads of many folks outside the general Phish universe.
Check it out below. The future is coming on.
A well-crafted cover can have the big effect of gaining some new fans and this new take on the 2001 tune is pretty sporty indeed. I imagine if Kazaa or Napster were still going strong, this woulda been a top-listing hit. Kinda like the famously mis-labeled Phish “Gin and Juice” cover (that was actually recorded by The Gourds).
As any Phish fan will gladly tell you, Trey Anastasio is no stranger to the imaginative cover. Gorillaz’s spooky-fun hit single “Clint Eastwood” is his latest rework, appearing on the upcoming solo album Traveler, due October 16th via Rubber Jungle Records/ATO Records. Anastasio first trotted out this jazzy take with the Trey Anastasio Band on tour, and the studio version similarly relies on Jennifer Hartswick’s brassy, sumptuous take on the verses. Anastasio handles the breezy chorus and swanky guitar stabs, and the whole thing struts with smoky bravado.
