“IF PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC AND CREAM HAD A PSYCHEDELIC SEX FUNK BABY” – YouTube Commenter
Was just privy’d to this uber-talented Bridgeport/BK-bred trio via a recommendation from a CT friend and I’ve been getting pretty mesmerized going through these videos ever since. With an intriguing kaliedo-jazz sound, an experienced support system (Red Light Management and Motormouth Media) in place, a solid self-titled debut album in the can and an extensive tour planned with New Zealand based songstress Kimbra for this fall, things seem to be moving quickly for this band that formed in 2009. Therefore, check ’em out and if you dig, keep an eye out for these guys in 2012 and beyond. Continue below for The Stepkids’ whereabouts this fall (got their show at the Fonda Theatre in L.A. in early-October on the calendar) and get an idea of their live sound while you’re at it.
NPR WORLD CAFE on The Stepkids:
It’s possible to describe The Stepkids’ style by adding the word “psychedelic” any of the following genres: jazz, punk, soul, funk, even classical. With a shout-out to the best shape-shifting qualities of Beck’s Midnite Vultures, The Stepkids’ members take similar inspirations from Parliament, The Beatles, Rufus & Chaka Khan and Cake — and visit them all in a single song.
