Bonnaroo 2007 | Artists Additions, Round One
(updated below on 2/27/07)
So Bonnaroo quietly announced two more additions to their initial line-up that was leaked and subsequently confirmed a couple weeks back. The two new additions are:
The Roots
The Wild Magnolia Mardi Gras Indians
Kind of a weak announcement, which may be why we haven’t heard a ton of talk about it. Or perhaps that initial leaked line-up wasn’t supposed to be so long? Anyways, The Roots are kind of an obvious choice, and a solid addition (Gotta have the “hip hop jamband” don’t ya?). The Wild Magnolia Mardi Gras Indians is kind an odd addition compared to most other artisits. My understanding is that these guys do a kind of street-art performance of song and dance in during Mardi Gras and JazzFest (wikipedia’s got some background here).
Ticket info update:
According to Billboard today (2/27), tickets are now sold out at the first few levels, and are only available at the highest price point of $214.50 (although, as of 11:45 AM CT the ticket site had not made this adjustment, I confirmed it by attempting to buy a ticket).
So will it sell out soon? What are your thoughts on future artist additions? You think any headliners are still on the horizon?
Man, is it me or are these big festivals getting really pricey?

The Babes of Bonnaroo
I need my Phil… Where is my Phil… Come on friends we all need our Phil…

I went to this fest in 05 and I have my ticket for this year but im dissapointed in the absence of Dave Matthews from this and last year in my oppinion there the best band to haved graced the Bonnaroo stage. I’m stooked for the Police and also The White Stripes. Tool will be sweet as well

I wouldnt mind a couple more big name DJs…PVD, Tiesto, Above and Beyond…in addition to particle, disco biscuits, umphreys, and some more electronica/psychedelic music like Thievery Corporation, built to spill, or even M83. I think these semi-reasonable additions would round the festival nicely.

ORNETTE COLEMAN!!!!! That is going to be awesome…and most likely the last chance many people will get to see such an influential Jazz musician of his caliber. Also, I’m glad to see El-P for some of that hip hop I was talking about.

you know, I’d really like to see Jerry and Elvis rocking it with Bob Marley and Tupac while Jesus pisses champagne on virgins. Aint gonna happen. Good thing I am cool with just going to see the sweet bands already lined up!!!

They need to add a little more underground hip hop, as of now, we only have Aesop Rock and The Roots. DJ Shadow also will be off the hook, but I would like to see Del, Sage Francis, and possibly Soul Position at the Roo. Also, many great bands are never headliners…anything with Les Claypool for instance. Wouldn’t mind seeing Buckethead, or even better, C2B3, they haven’t played since the first bonnaroo. Flecktones would be nice, and wouldn’t mind seeing a bassist Super Jam with Les Claypool, Mike Gordon, and Victor Wooten.

First of all, I wouldn’t get my hopes up for any more BIG announcements. The headliners are set, and there really isn’t room to add more. That mans no Dylan, no Pearl Jam, and certainly no Dave. Praise Jah for the latter– I don’t get you dave-o-philes. While he is a brilliant lyricist, he is a mediocre musician, AT BEST, who made the vry wis choice (or, shall i say, allowed Coran Cashaw to MAKE the very wis choice) to fill his band with ridiculously talented musicians. If it weren’t for the band, Dave would be going NOWHERE.
And as far as a Phish reunion– not gonna happen this year OR next– Trey is under a contract that dissallows that sort of performance from taking place. Bummer, but true.
Just be stoked about the line up we’ve got– if it isn’t enough for you, then don’t go. There are plenty of other fests you can spend your time and money at this summer.
I am waitng for the PERPETUAL GROOVE addidtion….I love those guys!!

Rumor has it that MMJ is going into the studio to cut a new album. Dylan and Neko Case would be great additions.

It would have to take Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age and Dinasour Jr. for this line up to compare to past line ups. I mean, Radiohead, now that is a headliner. Dave, now that is a headliner, the Police, are you kidding me, I haven’t listened to them in ten years and I don’t know if I would have ever again if it weren’t for the reunion. Sure, I have a great deal of Sting in my collection but I would go see him in some concert hall or something. . .Where are some of the old heavies, Dylan, Neil Young, Allman Brothers or some of the more powerful female vocolists out there that a place like this should have, Cat Power or Neko Case and what about My Morning Jacket or Modest Mouse. . .Are you kidding me, I should have just flown to Conchella instead. . .

You know, it is expensive to go to Bonnaroo, but I imagine that just going to see the Police at some venue like Phillips Arena here in GA would cost nearly as much. I think its soooo worth it to be able to get away for a few days and watch awesome performances with my pals. I’m excited! I hope it sells out so I’ll be able to sell my extra ticket. I got an extra for my bro but now he can’t go :(

Wild Mags, and most other Mardi Gras Indian Tribes, perform some of the hottest funk this side of nowhere! The bands are hot, the music is primal and the outfits are 100% handmade every year. If you haven’t ever heard their CDs, the Wild Mags and the Wild Tchoupatoulas, you need them.
They (Mardi Gras Indians) are always a highlight performance of Jazz Fest

Dinosaur Jr. is re-teaming this year and is planning a tour for the summer. Wouldn’t Bonnaroo make a great venue to show off some mad skills? Anyone heard any rumors of them playing there? If Trey doesn’t get tossed in jail, my guess is that he’ll have to show up since, Bonaroo is like what keeps him going in life…

So there didn’t end up being pearl jam at bonnaroo….but now it appears sources are saying they will be at lollapalooza instead this year…

I went to bonaroo 2 years ago and it rocked. But everything is expensive. I missed radiohead last year, but will PROBABLY go this year.
It really is too expensive…I got to see Robert Randolph and it was AWESOME…hope they make it again!

GA ticket prices really haven’t gone up this year from last. Only VIP. In fact, I believe I paid less for my ticket this year compared to last.
There have been rumblings that Robert Randolph & the Family will return for another Roo appearance. That’s about all I’ve been able to kick up.
Arcade Fire won’t be there. And it looks like MMJ is highly unlikely.

The first price tier $184.50 tickets sold out within hours last Friday. They’re now well into the $199.50 tier.

while the line-up is incredible, the tickets seem to be a little pricey. since bonnaroo recently bought the farm, maybe that accounts for some of the increased cost. but at the same time, it should also decrease some of their year to year expenditures. its time they reinvest some of their earnings into the site and their customers. plant some shade trees in the camping area, possibly build some semi-permanent toilet facilities, wash stations, water fountains, etc. owning the property opens alot of doors, it will be interesting to see if they make good use of these opportunities, and might be an incentive for me to return in the future…
