I’ve got to be honest–I’ve never been too much of a Wilco fan. I saw them for about fifteen minutes at Bonnaroo 2004 and it really wasn’t that impressive from where I was standing. I had just walked the two miles or so to get to the mainstage, so maybe my out-of-shape ass had a hard time getting there.
I downloaded their latest release, Kicking Television, and I think I’m a new fan. I mean, I’ve got five new favorites on the first disc alone. In everything I had ever read about Wilco, I simply glossed over everything but the fact they were considered part of this new alt-country genre. I don’t even think that’s true if you really listen to it. It doesn’t really sound like that to me–I don’t know, am I not getting that right?

Great post. And it’s not difficult to be won over by Wilco — great songwriting transcends all genres.
One clarification: The link you posted does not offer MP3s from Kicking Television. Those are just album tracks.

sorry justin, i may have sounded harsh. it’s just that i play in an “alt.country (whatever that is)” band and i’ve gotten tired of the tag. and yes, i do still occasionally enjoy the dead, but only the good stuff. there, i’m outed.

Yeah, I stumbled over there in the midst of a sun-poisoning fever that took me to the worst spots of Bonnaroo during the hottest sun of the day without sunblock on my legs.
Wilco was right about that time during the day, and the main stage at Bonnaroo is definitely daunting at first pass.

Interesting. That same show at Bonnaroo is exactly what sold me on the band. Even though I was about 600 yards from the stage, I still felt like they connected with me. But hey, to each his/her own. As I always say, that’s why they make 31 flavors, right?

Yeah, I just mean that I always thought the band was something they’re not–you should never judge a book by its cover or what other people say about it. I’ve had Summerteeth and I’m okay with that stuff, so I’ll head back and check out the two that you mention.

while i’m glad that wilco has garnered a new fan, i wish that you had looked at their entire catalog before seperating them from their “alt.country (whatever that is)” tag. A.M. and Being There are two of Tweedy’s shining and lasting moments and cannot be overlooked after the Summerteeth to Ghost… sonic exploration era. Great songcraft is just that in any genre, and the new new Banaroo boogie condecendence is disheartening, after all ya’ll do like American Beauty and Working Man’s Dead don’t you?
