Trey Kicks Off Tour: Newbs Rejoice, Vets Sigh

The new and improved 70 Volt Parade hit the road for its brief eight-show summer tour last night, playing 19 songs (all non-Phish and even three debuts) at Boston’s Bank of America Pavillion.
We likely won’t be covering the tour and posting setlists, but you can click on this link for constant updates from the road. Tonight, Beardless Red takes his act to Philly’s Festival Pier and Penn’s Landing where he’ll play with the incomparable Medeski, Martin and Wood trio.
Tomorrow evening the Ace Cowboy & Friends will catch Trey’s band at Lawn Gisland’s Jones Beach for the first time in more than a decade. Hello old friend: It’ll be really good to see you once again.

Scotty, I was with you 100% until last night…however, the Jones Beach show was an above-average but not great at all night. First, I’d point you to a post I wrote on here after the Cincy show in May where I fluffed Trey’s nuts like nobody’s business. I’m far from a Trey-hater. I definitely agree with your assessment of the punks and the mob mentality of lynching Trey.
But the highlights of last night were Trey playing with Mule and Warren playing with 70VP. There were some cool musical highlights from Trey’s band, but there were a few songs in there that were legitimately bad. Like, not good at all. I sat down for chrissakes, and I wasn’t alone! When have you ever sat down at a Phish or Trey show?!
I had a great time, it was a helluva show in general — Trey skipped setbreak and playted 20 mins acoustic — and I really enjoyed my day and evening at Jones Beach. Was it worth admission price? Absolutely, and I’d do it again. But Trey’s music is far from great right now, and it really is inferior to what he’s capable of. I’m not just “hating,” I’m just saying I know what he can do and he can do better.
I’ll have a full review up by tomorrow hopefully, but I just wanted to add this to the dialogue here.

Vets sigh? For those of you ‘sighing”, just keep on sighing while you keep walking -out the door.
True fans of Trey (in fact, any artist) are true fans, thru thick and thin, not these fairweather fans (punks), who loved Phish for 2 years than jumped on the ‘hater wagon” because it was cool to do so.
What’s the point if you don’t take chances? Trey is who he is because he does take those chances.
