Ozzfest 2007 | Free in 2007? Doubt it…
I’m sure a lot of you have seen it elsewhere by now, but big news was announced yesterday on the 2007 Ozzfest Music Festival — it’s FREE.
Details have yet to fully emerge on this other than the fact that this festival will be free and you’ll be given some more info soon from Live Nation on how to obtain tickets. I’m sure a bunch of radio stations will do some wild promotion that’ll require you to bite the head off a bat, but even still — that’s definitely worth the free price of admission to all the newest and hottest hard metal bands.
We’ll see — I’m slightly skeptical that they’ll be able to effectively pull this off with sponsorships alone. Can you imagine how far they’ll need to take this to make it cost-effective? I just don’t necessarily agree that this is the best way to serve up the fans that want to attend this festival. Free is free, better is better and all — but this just smells of PR and sure-to-backfire sponsorship deals anchoring the entire length of touring music festival. Color me pessimistic.

I was planning on going to Ozzfest this year..then I heard that it was free. Well some ppl think thats a good thing but really its s***ty. Half of the bigger bands wont be there this year because its free…and the bands that will be playin will prolly do a half ass job….so my opionion is f*** the free ozzfest, ill find a different summer concert to party at lol

I think it is a great idea. Also, if big bands only play for the money, then what the f*** do they write songs for anyway. Do it for the music. Theres tons upon tons of great talent that hasnt been discovered yet. System of a Down played for 350,000 dollars per show last year. Thats outrageous. And even if its is a bunch of s***ty bands (which it wont be)its f***in free. Im not bitchin. And if these so called “Legendary” bands wont play for their fans, their f***in assholes. Oh well, you can still see them on MTV Cribs.

the thing im worried about is that bands like disturbed, s.o.a.d., manson, korn, and other legendary bands wont want to play because they’re not getting payed and we’ll have to listen to a bunch of faggot emo bands who are trying to get noticed for six hours……
umm most of thoes are emo bands. alice in chains have already pulled out of ozzfest. in the latest interview i heard with vinny paul while he didn’t say no it sounded a lot more not going to happen then will

I think that this ozzfest will be awesome as long as I can get a hold of a ticket! I hope to see Black Label Society, Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Hellyeah(doubtful), and other kickass bands. I hope that since they’re pulling the plug on prices, they’ll still be some kickass bands playing!

You do realize ozzfest is way more than 4 hours right? I would have to venture it’s a full crowd for along the lines of at least 6+ hours. Usually the main stage plays for 5 hours. Anyway, I know that if I’m there I would be much more likely to buy merch now that I don’t have to pay 40-50$ for a ticket. Food and beverage sales will definitely boost as well. Maybe they will just charge 20$ parking. Hahaha, wouldn’t that be a bug up the ass of many Ozzfest goers.

I think it can work and I hope it does, because it could change the way concerts are promoted.
Clearly the #1 issue will be strength of the bands. If they just fill the bill with mediocre bands who want to play for the exposure, then it won’t work. If it is top-tier talent, then it could work.
From my read of the press release, the bands won’t make $$ but their expenses will be covered and they will have the ability to play their own shows on off days. This is a big key in making it work I think. They can draw top talent if they can play their own shows on off-nights, and already have their expenses covered for most of the trip.
I don’t think they will have to go far to make it cost-effective. The venues will have food and beverage sales (and parking fees) for a sold out crowd basically captive for 4+ hours.
Since ticket price is $0 they can expect higher merchandise sales and food and beverage sales.
From a sponsor perspective, you also have a crowd held captive for 4+ hours to market to, you will probably get a database of concert attendees to market to after the concert.
I think it can work.
