The date of July 9th will always serve as a wildly bittersweet anniversary for Grateful Dead fans as the fateful date in 1995 served as the last ever Grateful Dead show featuring Jerry Garcia.
The band was playing in Chicago at Soldier Field for two nights to close the tour, and sadly they never got a chance to play again. One month later in rehab, Jerry passed away, leaving us only with the last notes he played and what we had recorded while he was here.
The “So Many Roads” that closed the second set of that final night remains a wildly prescient place to leave the Grateful Dead canon at the time. There’s a full video feed of that performance from the show, which came straight from the venue feed itself (complete with panning to random graphics and the occasional Bob Weir or Vince Welnick shot).
Check it out today. 😢
So many roads, I tell you
New York to San Francisco
So many roads I know
All I want is one to take me home
From the high road to the low
So many roads I know
So many roads, so many roads
