On Sunday night under a full moon in Hollywood, Wilco closed out a lengthy tour of the U.S. in support of their 2011 LP The Whole Love with a two hour set and double encore for a nearly filled out Hollywood Bowl (just shy of 18,000 capacity – the largest natural amphitheater in the United States). Sunday night marked the band’s first show at the famed venue since opening for R.E.M. back in 2003. Taking the role as headliners at such a large and landmark venue had to be a big achievement for the band but you’d never know it from the workmanlike performance and business-as-usual attitude. As always, Jeff Tweedy’s between-song bantering was deadpan, dry and frequent, remarking midway through the set that Wilco is “just like The Sound of Music except noisier.” Highlights included “Dawned On Me,” “Spiders (Kidsmoke),” “Art of Almost,” “A Shot In the Arm” (filling Summer Teeth needs) and the closing “Outtasite (Outta Mind)”.
