WHAT: FreshGrass is a wonderland of traditional and cutting-edge bluegrass, tucked appropriately into a 19th-century factory turned 21st-century museum in the Berkshire mountains of northwestern Massachusetts. An opportunity for enthusiasts to both appreciate and participate, FreshGrass is family-friendly and brimming with the brightest talent not just on our four stages, but also in our galleries, brick-lined courtyards, and grassy fields.
WHEN: September 20-22, 2013
WHERE: MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA is one of the world’s premier centers for making and showing the best art of our time. The museum’s vast galleries and multiplicity of stages — both inside and out — offer artists unprecedented opportunities to make and present large-scale sculpture, inventive theater, and big new musical ideas that will confound expectations…and delight you.
WHY: This year’s lineup features guitar gods and banjo gurus, traditionalists and trailblazers — artists you already know and love, along with new FreshGrass discoveries. You’ll also find music workshops offered in conjunction with the Berklee College of Music American Roots Program, contests, kids’ activities, and great food.
HOW: MASS MoCA, located at 87 Marshall Street in North Adams, Massachusetts, is a lovely three-hour drive from New York City and Boston, much of it through the scenic Berkshire mountains. Or a quick one-hour hop from our closest train and commercial airport, in Albany, NY. Additional air service is available via Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT (near Hartford).
