Rarely has the world of EDM witnessed a group skyrocket to fame as fast as Krewella. The rambunctious trio consists of badass singer/songwriter sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousef and producer Kris “Rain Man” Trindl. With such a unique, energetic sound there is truly no way the world won’t love this Chicago-based group. Since the release of their first EP, Play Hard, Krewella has been finding ways to maintain their sexy, balls-to-the-walls style of dubstep while continuing to innovate and entice fans. In 2013, their single “Alive” hit number 32 on the US charts—and Krewella never looked back. With their brand new EP Get Wet smashing through the electronic world at the speed of light (debuting at #8 on the Billboard charts yesterday), it can be said with certainty that these crazy kids are here to stay.
It may have been a Tuesday night, but the sidewalks outside of Exchange LA were packed full of fans eager to celebrate the release of Get Wet. California’s own DJ duo Candyland (Ethan Davis and Josie Martin) started the evening off right with their hard-hitting style of trap, dubstep and house. Mark my words: these guys are on their way up and it won’t be long before their headlining their own shows across the country.
Up next was the soul-shaking sound of fellow Santa Barbara native Seven Lions aka Jeff Montalvo. Originally a metal/punk drummer, Montalvo is a true innovator of the EDM sound. Constantly pushing the boundaries of genres, Seven Lions is ethereal and mesmerizing in one moment and the next hair-raising and aggressive. In my opinion, he has the most progressive sound coming out of the OWSLA label to date. With Exchange LA’s superb sound system at his disposal, his set raised the stakes.
But the real stars of the show were the kids from Chicago. Krewella took the stage with unparalleled enthusiasm ready to rage their way through a perfectly executed DJ set. When they’re on stage, they pour everything into their performance—by the end they were soaked with sweat and ready to celebrate with their fans. Though they didn’t have their new “Volcano” stage with them, the light and video production was still excellent and filled the space perfectly.
The evening was unique in that it truly did feel like a party more than a concert. Being a DJ set, the girls swapped their signature vocals for turntables and proved their talent in the production arena. The trio perfectly balanced the pacing of the set—playing all of their hits (and some other peoples) but mixing it up with some rowdy trap and high-octane house sound. I mean, it WAS a foam party after all…it would be a false advertising if it didn’t get at least a little ravey at points. But not to fear, die-hard Krewella fans—every moment of their set was accentuated with that deep, nasty grime that we all love so much.
The cherry on top? 12th Planet surprised the crowd with a full set after Krewella wrapped up. This LA native is the Godfather of the dubstep game—frequently touted as the American Dubstep King. Mixing hip hop, dubstep and even a little bit of drum and bass, 12th Planet’s amped-up set was the perfect way to wrap this party. He took a moment to praise his friends in Krewella for an amazingly successful year and thanked them for letting him join their evening.
We cannot wait to see what this next year has in store for these troublemakers from Chicago, but for now we’d just like to congratulate Krewella on another epic EP, an epic release party and an epic tour this fall. Check out my photos from the show below…
