Thank you, SBC Blueroom, for your kick-ass Vegoose webcast. Even though you’re the corporate sponsor (so, by default, that makes you the enemy), you can be alright sometimes…
All times in CST
3:12 p.m. — Crap. I missed Steel Train and I’ve never heard them. I meant to catch it but I shaved off my beard with a dull razor. It took me like a half hour. Slightly Stoopid is on stage right now. I’m in my living room in Chicago. This is such a cheaper incarnation of Vegoose and it’s pretty sweet. Yeah, these guys are pretty good. I’ve never heard them before; they have a little Sublime sound in them as I can hear.
3:15 p.m. — North MIssissippi Allstars take over. I’ve heard this song before, I think it’s on the new one. Did I mention that this is friggin’ sweet?!
3:26 p.m. — Excellent climax, NMAS. Very enjoyable, actually.
3:38 p.m. — Chilling it out a little bit. I wonder if SBC is going to do their entire set. They’re saying until 2:45 p.m. Las Vegas time.
3:45 p.m. — They’re really jammin’ out here. I keep getting sidetracked with blog maintenance. I guess that’s technically not live bloggin’ as I’ve claimed. I’m still staying with it. Are you with me? Word.
3:54 p.m. — That crowd better be cheering. Luther dedicates their set to R.L. Burnside.
4:01 p.m. — Very moe.-like jam right now, I didn’t actually know that they brought it down like this. Good stuff.
4:03 p.m. — Dude, sick drum solo.
4:04 p.m. — Dude, nice re-entry on the tune there. I like NMAS. I think they’ve got the power-trio in blues soul that can work so nicely if done correctly. It’s like these Cream reunion shows–the quintessential blues power-trio getting reuniting (albeit to mixed reviews).
4:09 p.m. — Here’s the thing, that guitar solo was amazing. Very Tom Morello. I’m just not a humongous fan of the vocal style.
4:11 p.m. — Nice. Totally amazing washboard solo with Luther on the drums. Rockin’ it. Noisy, very noisy.
4:12 p.m. — Psychedelic Sex Machine…is…just…that…
4:17 p.m. — I really should take a break from my computer. I’m all crosseyed and s***.
Okay, I’m back.
4:51 p.m. — String Cheese Incident is now on. Perfect timing.
4:53 p.m. — I just realized that I probably won’t be seeing Primus. Well, actually, I might try and make it back by then. We’re going out to Ranalli’s tonight on Montrose.
4:54 p.m. — Intro jam about a minute in and I’m thinking this is Joyful Sound? Man, I really don’t know String Cheese Incident that well.
4:56 p.m. — Wow, Kang rockin’ Best Feeling. Well played. Well played. Wait, do I like String Cheese Incident now? I still can’t get over their damn name. It’s like, damnit, why did they have to name themselves that?
5:03 p.m. — Keller always says, “JAH! Rastafari!” there. Come on, Kanger Kang
5:06 p.m. — Best Feeling > Come As You Are in the very Vegoose fashion.
5:13 p.m. — Standard CAYA jam with some very nice slide work by Keith. Very funky, almost U2-like jam. Very cool. Good stuff, guys. Don’t stop!
5:14 p.m. — Duh, not Keith. Billy.
5:18 p.m. — BOO! Don’t show the damn hula hoopers. These are not the people that represent the scene. Ugh, WHY!
5:21 p.m. — Now they’re delving into the new stuff off One Step Closer. Sometimes a River is a good tune, actually. It’s one Keith wrote and I’m not sure how often he really contributed before that (songwriting-wise).
5:27 p.m. — Hrm, what’s next? They’re picking up their pace…
5:28 p.m. — Mouna Bowa, I think? I like this tune. It’s classic SCI if you ask me, and I think you could play it for anyone and say, “Yes, it’s as if this song was written for String Cheese Incident to play it…” Maybe that’s streching it, but you get the idea.
5:37 p.m. — If you saw that VIBE yellow ball bouncin’ through the crowd, it’s a fitting reminder that you can always email us at vibes @ livemusicblog.com. We love hearing from you guys. Did you go to Vegoose? Could you live blog it better? We understand.
5:38 p.m. — Quinn the Eskimo–Excellent!
5:43 p.m. — Bummer, I actually missed that whole song. I got a phonecall and had to finalize the plans for tonight. That’s understandable. I don’t know what they’re playing yet. Hrm. The crowd sure is dancing, though. First Kyle tune of the set.
5:49 p.m. — Excellent jam out of a pretty good tune, I’m not sure what it was though. This is almost Talking Heads-like. Very cool.
5:52 p.m. — Joyful Sound?
5:54 p.m. — Scratch that on Joyful Sound, I don’t know why I heard that. I just posted a new entry on some of the Vegoose photos (or lack thereof) so far
5:56 p.m. — I don’t know this one either. Kang’s singing..
6:00 p.m. — Sick percussion solo! This new addition to SCI is obvious welcome. I’m a huge percussion fan actually, as I am a part-time drummer in my own right. When I say part-time, I mean I haven’t played in months but I could pick it back up if I needed to. Scratch that, wanted to. And I do. You just watch out. I’ll be in a band soon enough. We’ll have our own MySpace page. And, speaking of which, I’m going to start a LIve Music Blog MySpace page. Good stuff.
6:01 p.m. — They’re bringing it down nicely…
6:02 p.m. — Triangle. “You can’t always get what you want!” Yes! Stop with the teasing!
6:05 p.m. — Nice, twenty-five minutes of SCI left. Very excellent.
6:07 p.m. — Seriously, I’ve heard and seen this before. But, what is with Kang’s shirts? I’m reminded of a very yellow sleeveless shirt that Mike Gordon seemed to wear every other night the last couple Phish tours.
6:10 p.m. — Bluegrass version of One Step Closer, and I have to say, I like the album version better. It has this great little groove.
6:11 p.m. — Yeah, you had but then you went back into the quick shuffle bluegrass style. It doesn’t fit this song well, I mean, I guess it’s cool that they’re mixing it up.
6:14 p.m. — I just remember that my friend Pete that was visiting earlier this week was possibly going to Vegoose. I should try and get a hold of him. I don’t think he’d be at the SCI stage watching this or anything, but I just remember that.
6:16 p.m. — I forget what that drum is called. ???
6:19 p.m. — This really is tight, this is worth a download for sure when it gets posted.
6:19 p.m. — Round the Wheel. Eh, I can take this one of leave it personally.
6:33 p.m. — SCI ends and Devendra Banhart begins. I haven’t heard him yet. This is interesting. Interesting, to say the least I supposed. I like it, 60’s rock sounding or something.
6:35 p.m. — I’m going to have to cut out for a little bit. Hopefully I’ll be watching the rest later. Feel free to leave your own live blog in the comments, but don’t be too vulgar or anything. Off to get some pizza…
Okay, I’m back (kinda)–and I guess I’m sorta drunk, too.
10:47 p.m. — Dave Matthews and Friends, featuring Big Red himself. Personally, I’m going to get myself ready for the 11:00 p.m. Primus set coming on. Hell yes.
10:48 p.m. — Dave Matthews looks a little funny actually. He looks like a Jedi warrior, ala Samuel L Jackson’s character in Star Wars. Damnit, I’m so full from pizza from earlier. Seriously, I’m stuffed.
11:00 p.m. — I smell Primus coming on. This is going to be sick.
11:03 p.m. — Aw crap, I got a little too excited, I guess. Maybe I’m just being negative and judgmental because I’m drunk or something, but it just seems to me that this music is too Adult Contemporary for me. Oh man, is that over the line?
11:28 p.m. — Dude, Primus To Defy the Laws of Tradition…SICK!
11:31 p.m. — Are they playing the full Frizzle Fry album?????
11:39 p.m. — Wow, my friend Scott and I are just sitting here all drunk and in love with Primus. I love every second of this.
11:40 p.m. — Primus sucks! Primus sucks! “You know, I hear to be the bearer of bad news. But you folks, you’re missing Beck right now…”
11:49 p.m. — Well, definitely not Frizzle Fry in its entirety. I’m not sure if I’ve heard this one. Les Claypool is amazing by the way. All the time. Not ever not.
12:06 a.m. — I was going to write a review for the Hallucino-Genetics DVD that Primus put out last year. That show is amazing, and this Vegoose set is very reminiscent of that show.
12:16 a.m — What the hell, Les Claypool? The three of us can agree…
12:37 a.m. — I think I’m going to be getting ready to go to bed soon. It’s 12:40ish, however, it’s actually 11:40ish. We get an extra hour of sleep…is that how that works?
12:54 a.m. — Webcast over. Thank you again, SBC Blueroom. That was awesome.
