May 8th was the first 100* degree day of 2018 and Chris Robinson, with his new project “As The Crow Flies”, added to the inferno. 🔥
Robinson and his crew took over the Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas and put their spin on some classic hits from The Black Crowes as we all know that’s why everyone’s in the building.
As The Crow Flies is a side project for each of these musicians, and is comprised of Chris on vocals and harmonica, Marcus King and Audley Freed on guitar, Andy Hess on bass, and Robinson’s fellow CRB band mates, Adam MacDougall on keys and Tony Leone on drums.
The show was one long set with an encore (close to two hours), and ATCF delivered the Crowes energetic hit “Remedy” as their opener. Robinson and his crew wove their way in and out of the standards, “Twice As Hard” “Sometimes Salvation” and “Good Friday” with ease. The highlight of the second half of the show was the ATCF’s twenty minute rendition of “Wiser Time”, which had Audly and Marcus dueling it out in the third solo of the song, following Adam’s magic keyboard solo. Tony and Andy worked perfectly together to hold all the solos together.
ATCF also did not disappoint their Black Crowes heavy fanbase with the staples, “She Talks To Angels”, “Thorn In My Pride”, and “Hard To Handle”. With Chris Robinson being a living… breathing… human jukebox, ATCF pulled out some great covers to sprinkle into their set with “Almost Cut My Hair” “Hush” and an encore of “Rock And Roll Hootchie Koo”.
All in all, you could tell that the fans were excited had a blast revisiting some amazing old Black Crowes songs, that they hadn’t heard Chris Robinson sing in five years . Check out the setlist below, and click on the link to download my audio recording.
