Backyard Tire Fire @ Double Door, EP Release Show

I’ve seen the band a few times now and they seem to pick up confidence every time I’ve caught their set. Sure, it helps to come home for the weekend when you’ve been out on the road for awhile, but they’re truly stepping it up every time they come around and they’ll continue to do so for the near short-term (at least from what I can tell). They’ve got the skill. They’ve got their youth. Now they need to continue to keep capitalizing — which I seem to see more and more of everyday in the online music world…

I chatted with Ed Anderson (lead) before the show, as we’re actually friends by way of our small-world connections (Ed and his bro Matt grew up in St. Charles, IL and I grew up right next door in Geneva, IL). He seemed a little tired from the night before; by his accounts, an all-out rager of an EP release show at the Castle Theatre in downtown Bloomington, IL (right down the block from my old college stomping grounds). He was happy to play Double Door and he’s happy to “take a break at home” by playing two EP release shows. Hell, I’d hate to see what these guys can do when they’re working…

The crowd was loving the show, and I was especially drawn to the new tracks from their Skin and Bones EP — I think I enjoyed “Downtime” the most. Other standouts include the opener, “I got drunk, then I fell down!”. That about sums up how I felt the next morning…
