A good energy at a show is one that is cultivated through energy, sound, and crowd response. TOKiMONSTA celebrated the release of her newest album Half Shadows at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco this Wednesday and utilized these means expertly to showcase her extraordinary skills of guiding the crowds energy. She played her entire new album throughout the night, but moved in phases of chill head-bobbing electronic hip hop beats, uptempo deep house, trap & bass, and lots of other genres. Her entire set was very 808 heavy, in a good way, but was utilized in a more subtle ambient electronic sound until about three-quarters of the way through when she broke out the trap cannons on Flosstradamus’ trap anthem in the form of their remix of “Original Don,” as well as several other bass bangers like a remix she did of Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie”. A few other more memorable high energy moments included some house beats with Wu-Tang Clan’s “Shame On A Nigga” thrown over the top and an epic ending of “Hard in the Paint” mixed into a “Purple Haze” and “Xplosive” mashup.
TOKi showed that she is comfortable with every genre be it heavy bass and trap or mellow groovy downtempo and she transitioned between them all like a champ. Look out for TOKiMONSTA as one of the best female DJs to see live in the electronic scene for whatever sub-genre you may enjoy…
