Our friend Matt Hebert shot Bassnectar for us last week in the middle of the East Coast leg of his Immersive Music Tour. —Editor
Bassnectar, in the midst of his Immersive Music Tour, arrived in Happy Valley on one of the rainiest days of the year. However, the cold rain did nothing to keep thousands of Penn State college students from taking a break from their studies to get their bass fix. Within moments of Bassnectar taking the stage, I understood what is meant by ‘Immersive’. This show is a full on assault on the senses. Massive LED screens, light rigs, balloons drops… he even ‘made it rain’ inside the Bryce Jordan Center with giant confetti cannons. Of course, Bassnecter also comes equipped with one of the gnarliest sound systems I have ever heard. (his team is nice enough to handout ear plugs if you happen to forget your own).
The music was an elaborate mix of Bassnectar originals plus some well timed covers and of course the signature bass drops. Lorin skillfully kept the energy of the house rolling all night with seemingly no breaks in the music. Maybe I am showing my age, but I was very impressed with the “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” remix that appeared late into the set, but then again the younger crowd seemed to agree with my opinion. Despite the note on the tour page, I was still a little surprised by the 11pm hard stop time of the show. However, judging by the sweaty, exhausted looks on the college students, I think they got what they came for. Remember kids: stay in school, don’t do drugs, and go see Bassnectar!
