Widespread Panic’s 2 night stay at the Joint in the Hard Rock Casino in Vegas kicked off big Friday night July 12th (photos / setlist). If you wanted to lose yourself in music this weekend this was the place.
Dirty Dozen opened up on the second night (as well as first), wielding all their power and funky brass. With an almost 30 year history this band knows how to make people want to dance. I can see why they were the perfect choice for a big weekend opener / collaborator.
Panic took the stage at 9:30, blazing out of the gate with “Henry Parsons Died” . The 7th song of the night brought our first sit-in with Roger Lewis (sax) and Kevin Harris (Tenor Saxophone) of the Dirty Dozen. The first set was closed out by a funky version of “Chilly Water”, a great set closer.
Set 2 opened up with the more recent “Saint Ex”, followed by fan favorite “Space Wrangler”. Widespread’s lighting wall was back and a perfect ride for the night. The highlight was all of the Dirty Dozen crew taking the stage for Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters”. Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” closed down the set. The encore consisted of a cover of Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers to Cross”, “The Take Out” and closing out the 2 night run with local resident (and huge Panic fan) Carrot Top for “Porch Song”.
Also in the giving spirit, High props to Widespread Panic for backing the Food and Fund Drive with Vegas’s “Three Square Food Bank”. Patrons donated $1-3 which provides food assistance to the Las Vegas community.
Also huge props to the official Widespread after show guests (Vegas and Flagstaff shows) Spafford. They killed it both night at the adjacent Vinyl music hall till 3 am each night.
