At the axis of cool and cooler, otherwise known as the Fonda Theatre this last Sunday, Divine Fits and Cold Cave closed out their US tour with a show in Hollywood. Both groups are second bands of their respective members (American Nightmare/Give up the Ghost, Spoon, and Wolf Parade/Atlas Strategic/Handsome Furs) but that’s where the similarity ends. Cold Cave is an explosion of synth noirwave and longing vocals, while Divine Fits perfects garage rock informed by their previous rock efforts: it wouldn’t raise an eyebrow to have seen “My Love Is Real” on the previous Handsome Furs record or “Flaggin A Ride” on Spoon’s last release.
Cold Cave’s new band sounded superb, and though I will miss “Burning Sage” from the setlist (Cold Cave main man Wesley Eisold won’t perform the track without former touring member Dominick Fernow of Prurient) the band offers the helpful addition of live instrumentation beyond sweating over a synth. A roar of applause greeted Divine Fits as they took the stage, cranking out a blistering set that included their entire album and 3 covers. View the setlist and photos below.
