Sound Tribe Sector 9 dropped a slew of recent announcements as they roll on through their fall tour and gear up to release their new album, entitled Ad Explorata. Check it out…
Most interesting to us is that the band will be helping iClips add to their premium broadcast options with a series of webcasts from their Fall Tour called Wednesday Nights Live. The series will air every Wednesday in October, starting tonight with their show in Omaha, and following with Louisville (10/14), Bridgeport (10/21) and Knoxville (10/28). You can buy individual shows for $5 or buy access to the entire series (4 webcasts) for $15.
STS9 also just announced a new studio album, Ad Explorata, which will drop later this Fall. They’ve released a single called “Atlas,” which is available at 1320Records, STS9.com, iTunes, and streaming in the widget below. The new tune is also the first track featured on their label’s latest podcast, which has tracks by a number of other artists on the 1320 Records roster and is available for free download.
By the way, if you’re curious about album’s title, they’ve even got an update about that too: The Genesis of Ad Explorata.
Lastly, we noticed that the band has begun offering on-demand CD recordings of the show immediately following it (often called “Instant Live”):
STS9 is pleased to begin offering CD’s on-DEMAND of each evening’s show right after the encore this fall! Starting this weekend at Stubb’s BBQ, fans will be able to purchase the recording of each evening’s performance as they leave the venue. You can relive the magic on your car ride home! Supplies are limited, and CD’s may not be available at all venues. Swing by the merchandise booth through out the night for all the details and to place your order!
It’ll be interesting to see if STS9 can pull this off successfully. They seem to have their collective s*** together, so all the power to them. The on-demand services seems to be a win-win for the band and the hardcore fans alike. A number of mid-tier touring bands have tried to implement this over the years, but the logistics of the operation can be a bit tricky. That said, I know that some bands/artists have successfully set up this kind of “Instant Live CD” operation at their shows. Bob Schneider has quietly been offering this service at his shows for years, often bringing in a steady supply of additional income for his independent operation (according to this article from Austin 360). We also know that Umphrey’s McGee has been offering this on-demand service for some time, though I don’t have any further details on its level of success (any UM fans care to share their experience)?
Although I’ve not always been a hardcore STS9 follower, it has been cool to watch these guys grow from a tiny electronic jamband into a sizable touring force (I first saw them at the Haunt in Ithaca, NY, but these days their play Red Rocks and headlining major festivals). Maybe all that Mayan calendar crystal-wizardry has really paid off for these guys?
