Known to throw together a festival and/or tour with the Disco Biscuits, Umphrey’s McGee is joining another heavy hitter this summer on a dual bill. STS9 will be teaming up with Chicago’s prog-rock jamband for 16 dates in the midwest and along the east coast throughout the month of July. The bands will be trading headlining duties in no particular pattern, but it seems like the group with the larger fan base in each respective city will close out the night. STS9 will jump off the tour for two set date in Burlington and there are more west coast dates on the way, though it seems these may be STS9 only. For those fans who just must see their band of choice last, there are numerous after-parties throughout the tour. To put it simply, I’m excited…really excited.

STS9 CLOSES THE SHOW IN: St. Louis, Council Bluffs, Glen Allen, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Myrtle Beach, Cary NC, and BOTH nights in Atlanta!
Both of these bands have been coming on strong in the last few years. They seem to be a part of the triumvirate of bands that have filled the void left by Phish in 2003 (the Disco Biscuits being the third). One thing that I really respect about these groups is their commitment to the larger world and those in need. Conscious Alliance will be accepting food donations at every stop on the tour. These dates are going to be amazing, and I think 2008 is going to be another strong year for both of these bands.
Umphrey’s McGee just released their latest live album, Live at the Murat, which received four stars from Rolling Stone. The sextet just returned from Jam in the Dam and has already notched a three-night run at San Fransisco’s Fillmore West in 2008. Our own Justin Ward got down at the the show, sort of.

Personally, I am a huge fan of what STS9 has done in the studio and especially on stage. This summer tour is in support of their upcoming album peaceblaster, which if it is anything like Artifact will be groundbreaking for the IDM and live electronic scenes. The album is set for July release and after hearing some of the new stuff when I caught STS9 back in February, it’s gonna be hot!
