According to Deadline, Martin Scorsese is set to direct and produce a new biopic on the Grateful Dead. The news comes with the confirmation that Jonah Hill will be playing the Jerry Garcia role and will have a hand in producing the movie as well.
Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who received rave reviews for penning American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson, are writing the script with Rick Yorn of LBI Entertainment joining Hill and Scorsese as producers. Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Trixie Garcia, Eric Eisner and Bernie Cahill will exec produce. Insiders add that with the band and the group’s management participating in the film, Apple has rights to use the groups musical catalogue for the film.
It’s great to see they’ll have rights to the catalogue and the surviving members of the Grateful Dead onboard to help see things through. Can’t wait to see what comes of this.
In the meantime, y’all need to see some of these hilarious tweets coming out today following the news:

Memo to Scorsese: If you need to cast an aging queen as a washed-up Beatnik who becomes obsessed with the young Bob Weir, slip into my DMs. pic.twitter.com/Nd0q42EweW
