Color me #EXCITED about this one as one of our favorite supergroups ever formed may just have a chance to see the light of day sometime again soon.
Thanks to some new remarks made to the media by Stewart Copeland, the famously outspoken drummer from The Police and more recently Oysterhead, it looks like that latter group featuring Trey Anastasio of Phish and Les Claypool of Primus and The Claypool Lennon Delirium does actually put some thought to the idea that they should give the project another chance.
Back during the Phish hiatus, the group released an album called The Grand Pecking Order. Then toured, then they disappeared as a trio and went off into other projects.
Radio.com was the one who interviewed Copeland and got this nugget of a quote:
Which leads me to ask about your great former band, Oysterhead [the supergroup that featured Copeland, Claypool and Phish‘s Trey Anastasio]. Would you guys ever do a second album or another tour?
We haven’t actually all been in the same room at the same time for quite a while. I saw Trey not too long ago, I see Les all the time, and we all say, “Yeah, we’re gonna do it, we’re gonna do it!” And we all love the idea, but the two other guys have working bands. I’ve got what I’m doing, but I’m probably a lot more available than they are. But when a hole in both of their schedules emerges, we’ll probably do something. I’d like to get both of them over here to the Sacred Grove, just to do a Sacred Grove track just for a start.
“We’ll probably do something” is another way of saying, “I have no damn clue if it’ll ever happen,” but I appreciate his sentiment entirely. Personally I’d love to see them do something again. If I had to be on a desert island with three musicians who’s playing styles I LOVE regardless of what is actually happening compositionally, I would pick these three in a heartbeat every single time.
As for some of their songwriting, I can’t say “Mr. Oysterhead” could go down in the annals of greatest song ever, but it certainly was a fun album. I still think “Wield the Spade” is one of the most interesting songs that any of them have ever recorded.
We’ll definitely be paying a close watch on this one.
