While I wish I was waking up today in New Orleans and taking in my first day of Jazz Fest, I’m thankful that the local radio station WWOZ is taking matters into their own hands again and offering up two weeks of fantastic Jazz Festing In Place programming again like they did last year.
Everything kicks off today at 11am CT with Kermit Ruffins & the BBQ Swingers from Jazz Fest 2001. Here’s what’s also happening today, and check out the cubes here.
Shortly after 6pm CT, we are thrilled to be able to share a rare recording of The Meters performing at the very first Jazz Fest in 1970. Also from that first festival, hear Preservation Hall Jazz Band around 3:30pm CT. You won’t want to miss either of these.
Around noon, we reprise Ella Fitzgerald’s 1977 Municipal Auditorium set, featuring a surprise appearance by Stevie Wonder. This one is back by popular demand! Check out some history on how this special collaboration happened here.Around 2pm CT, tune in for an incredible Richie Havens set on the Gentilly Stage that was one of Richie’s own favorites of his entire career. Richie’s estate has worked with the Archive of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation to get a perfect version of the audio. Richie Havens fans, you’re in for a treat.
Also airing today: Bruce Daigrepont, Burning Spear, Leroy Jones, Donald Harrison, Jr., Henry Butler, Shirley Horn, Eric Lindell, and Marcia Ball. 💜
Tune in and check out the food, crafts, and more at wwoz.org!
