Our good buddy Patrick got to witness My Morning Jacket’s return to the road this past Tuesday night at the historic Alabama Theater in Birmingham, and it’s fair to say that his mind was nicely blown by the whole event. Follow the link to check out all of his photos and some video he shot…
a night at alabama theater with my morning jacket [143245.org]
this was only the 2nd mmj show i have seen, and my first indoors, and it did not disappoint. the lighting throughout was incredible, and the song selection kept people interested and the energy up. i can’t remember the last time i have seen a band literally pour themselves out on stage. the set clocked in at almost 2 hours, and never let up. jim’s story about bribing the security guard at Vulcan to watch the sun rise really made you feel like they were excited to be in town. the cape & the towel however, left me a little confused.
There’s nothing to be confused by when Jim James throws on his cape. This blogger sums up my sentiments exactly…
He wore a cape. Not many artists can wear a cape and make it work. Jim James can. I love capes and I love cloaks. The man behind the cape knows more than you. Even in his most sincere of moments, he has something that he keeps to himself. He is the singer in a band. Though he only wears it a couple of times throughout the night, his cape is his shield. He is invisible. He is “standing on the sound of some lonesome hearted people going down” sang Neil Young.
It’s his own weird way of making us feel like he’s mysterious. They’ve done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
