The founder of Burning Man, Larry Harvey, has passed away following a stroke earlier this month.
The news was confirmed on BurningMan.org and they posted the picture you see above:
Our founder, friend, and original instigator, Larry Harvey has passed away. Larry was a visionary, a mentor, a philosopher, and a passionate advocate for Burning Man’s culture and principles. We have lost our founder. The world has lost a great human being.
Along with the quick message you see when you’re taken there, a longer tribute post written by Marian Goodell, CEO and Board member of the Burning Man Project, was released that explained a little more about why this is such a huge loss for the community at large.
Larry was never one for labels. He didn’t fit a mold; he broke it with the way he lived his life. He was 100% authentic to his core. For all of us who knew or worked with him, he was a landscape gardener, a philosopher, a visionary, a wit, a writer, an inspiration, an instigator, a mentor, and at one point a taxi driver and a bike messenger. He was always a passionate advocate for our culture and principles that emanate from the Burning Man experience in the Black Rock Desert.
