Jonathan Demme has passed away at the age of 73, which was confirmed earlier today.
The cause was esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease, according to a source close to the family. He was originally treated for the disease in 2010, but suffered from a recurrence in 2015, and his condition deteriorated in recent weeks.
While I loved a lot of his movies (Philadelphia, Silence of the Lambs), it’s pretty clear that the biggest impact he had on me was through his work with Talking Heads for their seminal concert film, Stop Making Sense. Will be rocking this today and thinking of the Directing as I go through it, this was a seriously inventive piece of art all around.
