Dead & Company just finished up their second night of Summer Tour 2021 in Bristow, VA. The first show back on tour had the band sounding strong for taking such a long break off the road, and tonight’s show was no exception.
The band opened with “Cold Rain and Snow” and worked in a few of my favorites in set one, including a fun “Mr. Charlie,” a beautiful version of “Friend of the Devil,” and a really exploratory “Bird Song” which fed directly into “Don’t Ease Me In” to close the set.
For the second set, the band opened with “Here Comes Sunshine” and followed that right up with a rippin’ “Cumberland Blues.” The real standout moments that followed were the playing and soul that everyone put into “He’s Gone,” plus the always crowd pleasing “Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain” grouping that had fans going nuts when Oteil took the lead on the latter.
The portion of the show we call “Drums” was particularly wild tonight, and the “Black Peter” that appeared out of “Space” was absolutely stunning. Then the band left on a high note with “Sugar Magnolia” and brought this back down again with the emotional goodbye of “Black Muddy River” to close out the show.
Another great show from the couch.
Check out the setlist and poster below. We’ll round up some video clips tomorrow.
