Athens, GA, has always been a great Southern music town, both in terms of the musical nightilife but also for churning out great local bands. And the city’s annual Athfest is a good place for its local talent to shine. Athfest 2007, which is slated for June 20 – 24, has now confirmed some solid Southern rockers as the main headliners:
Perpetual Groove – Friday, 6/22
The Whigs – Saturday, 6/23
The Drive-By Truckers – Sunday, 6/24
So far, Athfest is just confirming these three headliners, but the multi-day event will eventually feature a slew of outdoor events and nighttime club gigs. Each of these bands brings its own Southern flavor, and in my opinion, they’re all perfect for this festival. I recently saw P-Groove rock out a nice afternoon set at Langerado, and the Whigs have been getting a lot of playing time on my iPod since I grabbed their album off of eMusic a couple months back. To put it simply, they rock! I’m still getting to know the Drive-By Truckers, but I’ve only heard great things from other music fans.
We’ll keep an eye out for more Athfest artist additions, but I think this is a really good start. For more info, check out the main Athfest website.
