Perhaps it seems all too fitting for a student’s calendar year that Halloween bisects the fall semester while St. Patrick’s Day does the spring. These holidays have come to be necessary recesses from the competitive grind of undergraduate studies. The University of Colorado at Boulder has held a notorious reputation for raucous partying, debauchery, and almost everything else your parents never wanted you to do especially during these times. And so it would seem to be the perfect place to enjoy the Halloween celebrations. But this year, save it for the weekend, because nestled between Denver and Boulder is Broomfield’s 1st Bank Center, and it’s setting the stage for the biggest Halloween event in the area.
DJ superduo, GrizMatik (GRiZ and Gramatik) is coming back to Colorado to headline the night. Their last Colorado appearance was in July for Global Dance Festival at Red Rocks. What’s changed since then? Last week GRiZ graced the internet with a brand new free album (that’s right, FREE). Start to finish this album is a true work of auditory art. It’s called Rebel Era, and it’s got funky instrumentals, soulful vocal samples, and a substantial amount of sax over melodic womps. The album also features Dominic Lalli of Big Gigantic, providing additional sax, and The Floozies, an awesome nu-funk duo.
As for Gramatik, not only will he be headlining with GRiZ, but will also be opening with another one of his side projects, Exmag. In this group Gramatik lays beats down for a groovy band that undoubtedly includes guitarist Eric Mendelson, whom we are familiar with for his ongoing collaboration with Gramatik on stage and in the studio. One of the usual suspects, Two Fresh will also be opening. And last but certainly not least A-Trak will be joining the bill, a DJ definitely worth showing up early for. A child prodigy in his early teens on the turntables, since then he’s founded the successful record label, Fool’s Gold Records.
