If my loyal readers couldn’t tell, I’ve been putting a little less time and focus on this music blog as of late. I’m working to re-find my muse in some ways, as I seem to have lost sight of what I want this site to be for me and for you…and that can be debilitating to blogger motivation (see here for a well-written post on the subject by Ryan)…
That doesn’t mean you should suffer, and clearly my lack of getting Phish Friday posts up regularly and timely would be cause for debilitating suffering on the part of my readers — I mean, I totally get that…
With this weeks Phish Friday, I’m going back into my personal history with Phish (yet again). My better half and I caught both Chicago dates from the Fall 2000 tour and the first night was fantastic. “Down with Disease” started the show and it was filled with a lot of excitement and a lot of energy, but if you listen below — I think it takes the guys a minute or two to find that. The delivery sounds hurried, but it all begins to make sense at about minute 5:00.
At about 9:30, the band quiets down the jam really soft and pretty-like…only to re-emerge with the beginnings of a slow buildup at 10:30. By the time the final notes on this jam are heard (before the trademark DWD guitar solo), numerous rounds of chills had gone all wavy gravy up and down my back. That’s some serious s***, man…
As for “You Enjoy Myself,” well, that’s usually always something to write home about…
Glowstick war: 4:00
Funk clap-along: 11:30
This was the first time I had seen this song live, and I have to say that it was quite an experience just in and of itself. I know that glowstick wars are way outplayed at this point, but it’s quite a sight to take in if you’ve never seen it. An entire arena of people just tossing glowsticks in the air as far as they can toss ’em, crowd roaring, band playing — it gave me chills and one very large s***-eating grin, that’s for sure…
I know I’m going to date myself insanely by stating this fact but this was only my second Phish show. At this point, I already knew it myself — the glory days of the band were close to done and I was soooooo late to the party.
Oh well, at least I can enjoy the memories…
