Kalamazoo residents, Greensky Bluegrass, paid a return visit to Crystal Bay Casino the night before their big show at the Fillmore, where they will be playing with bluegrass legend, Sam Bush, the following night. This wasn’t their first rodeo at Crystal Bay; they have played the Red Room in 2010 and the Crown Room in 2011 and 2012. I was expecting a very somewhat relaxed show, considering they had the Fillmore the following night, but they once again proved that they give 100% for every live show. The crowd, filled with smiling faces of all ages, danced until the last note was played. This band always turns their shows into one huge party. My favorite tune of the night, by far, was “Leap Year” written by mandolin player and singer Paul Hoffman. Second set saw such tunes at “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down”, “Lose My Way”, and “Tarpology” (see setlist below). The band flows together so well and never steps on each other’s musical “toes”. The harmonies between Paul Hoffman and Dave Bruzza seem to compliment each other and Bruzza’s guitar playing has always impressed me.
Raging crowd at @cbctahoe tonight. Get ready @FillmoreSF, we're coming in hot! #gsbg13 #thefillmore #CA #Tahoe pic.twitter.com/851ceZFiFS

Ryan Montbleau opened up the show with some funk, rock, and smooth vocals. He joined Greensky toward the end of their second set with Montbleau on vocals for an awesome cover of “Boogie on Reggae Woman”. Montbleau’s guitarist, Lyle Brewer, joined the band for “Dustbowl Overtures” and “Butcher’s Girl”. After the show, I had the chance to chat with some of the band members, who were eagerly awaiting their Fillmore show with legend, Sam Bush. One thing for sure, this band never disappoints; so keep up with their busy summer tour dates, including a stop at Red Rocks with Galactic and a follow up to their album, Hand Guns.
