A lot of my time at SXSW this year was spent trying to convince anyone I chatted with about the power of podcasting — and using a free service like FeedBurner to help you distribute those podcasts — especially when most bands are already relinquishing control and letting their music onto MySpace as it is. It was one of the reasons I got to go in the first place, so it was one of my goals while soaking up all the fun that occurs around you in the meantime.
While I got a lot of blank stares and dumb looks in response to my elevator pitch, I think my words resonated fairly well with a small subset of the people I got to meet down there. “You, as a band, should make your own podcast and submit it to iTunes. Let the label sell your music — you should give away the rest!” I’ll admit that pitch is rather selfish which I normally talked around as, “well, you’ll see my thought process rear itself harder once the entitled generation figures out how they want to consume your music and help you make money, because it’s NOT going to be from record sales (in case you didn’t know that already).”
Thankfully, some bands are already way ahead of this curve. STS9 has been a Live Music Blog favorite for a while now and they just released their new podcast; I was blown away by the third track…
The song is called, “Abcees,” which I had never heard before today. It’s very dubbed-out yet driving, so it kind just made me start grooving at my desk before I ever realized what I listening to. It sounds like the band has really been playing amazing lately and they’re pulling out all the stops for their fans, including playing five sold-out shows in Boulder without repeating one song throughout the entire run. There are some photos from that epicness here and here.
Be sure to catch these guys out on the road sometime soon; upcoming tour dates after the jump…
