The best way to describe Saturday night’s Ariel Pink show at Tipitina’s would be to say that it was analagous to a musical gumbo. You take all the odds and ends left over from the week and throw them in a pot, and surprisingly enough when the water starts to simmer you have something amazing. There were three rather unique bands in the pot that night. Read more…
PHOTOS / RECAP: Parquet Courts, Naomi Punk @ Neumos, Seattle, WA 6/12/13
Brooklyn’s Parquet Courts brought their late 70s/early 80s style punk to Neumos last night. They use the loud, repetitive jangle of punk as an engaging foundation for thoughtful social commentary. Their debut release from last year, Light Up Gold, includes 15 tightly packed tracks that power onward from start to... more
PHOTOS / RECAP: Dave Matthews Band, The Head and the Heart @ Comcast Theatre, Hartford CT, 6/7-6/8/13
This past weekend was the annual Dave Matthews Band two-night run in Hartford, and this year they came with support from The Head and the Heart. My brothers and I were not going to let ugly clouds and nonstop rain keep us from a good time. Pizzas were purchased, beers... more
PHOTOS / RECAP: Dispatch @ Ryman Auditorium, Nashville 5/29/13
A few weeks back I was fortunate enough to get to experience the indie-reggae band whose CD I’d always use to start my Spring Break. The same band that every indie jam band in the past decade loves to name as an influence. I saw Dispatch, and it was at... more
CONCERT RECAP: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers @ Fonda Theatre, LA, CA 6/9/13
NOTE: See the photo gallery, setlist and videos at the bottom. Coming off a Saturday show that had to be one of the more frustrating and disappointing night's of the band's storied career (being forced to cut the show short by fire marshal), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers came roaring back... more
PHOTOS / RECAP: moe. @ Ives Concert Park, Danbury, CT 6/1/13
"With a ron ron here, and a ron ron there...here a ron, there a ron, everywhere a moe-ron..." Well that's what their fans call themselves at least...moe-rons. With that title, flattering or not, those moe-rons were having the time of their lives on a nice, warm Saturday night at Ives Concert... more
RECAP: !!! @ Tipitina’s, New Orleans, 5/24/13
A modestly thin crowd at Tipitina’s got down hard last Friday night, but the music they were grooving to was far from the NOLA funk that usually fills those hallowed halls. !!! (pronounced “chk chk chk”) blasted through a tight, hour long set that showcased their distinct dance-punk stylings... more
RECAP / VINES: Tame Impala, Jonathan Wilson @ Fox Theater, Oakland 5/29/13
For a moment yesterday I contemplated actually giving up my ticket to see Tame Impala with opener Jonathan Wilson at the Fox Theater in Oakland, because when you've been emotionally invested in a band and want to see them succeed and you've seen them three times previously you wonder if... more

PHOTOS / RECAP: Devendra Banhart @ Regency Ballroom, SF 5/21/13
What happens when every guy at your coffee shop starts rocking long hair and a beard? If you're Devendra Banhart, you ditch the hippie costume, start playing around with a synthesizer, and release a new album. Earlier this year the Texas born, Venezuela raised musician released his eighth solo album,... more

CONCERT RECAP: Moon Taxi @ Tipitina’s Uptown, New Orleans, LA 5/16/13
Let me be the first to say, I am by no means a jam band connoisseur or even a casual fan at best. Bands like Umphrey's McGee, Widespread Panic, Phish, or even the Grateful Dead aren’t remotely part of my personal musical lexicon. To give you the extent... more
PHOTOS / RECAP: Soundgarden @ The Oakdale Theatre, Wallingford, CT 5/17/13
What a show! Pure Rock & Roll played to its finest and sung by Chris Cornell, a man with the voice of a God and a vocal range like no other. I've had the pleasure of catching a solo acoustic Chris Cornell show a couple of years back but that... more
CONCERT RECAP: Toad The Wet Sprocket @ House of Blues NOLA 5/13/13
It’s hard to believe that Toad the Wet Sprocket have been in existence in some form since 1986, even harder to believe they haven’t put out any new material since Coil in 1997. Luckily for fans, that’s about to change. Glen and the gang are currently testing out new... more

CONCERT RECAP: Foals, Surfer Blood & Blondfire @ House of Blues NOLA 4/28/13
That funny band expression, “they’re big in Europe” was the precursor to the Foals show Sunday night at the House of Blues New Orleans. While the show wasn’t sold out, it was packed and pleasantly comfortable. Supporting act Blondfire was a victim of rain, Jazz Fest, and the... more

CONCERT RECAP: Bonobo w/ DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown (aka Erykah Badu) @ The Warfield, SF 5/3/13
This past Friday night I was lucky enough to pull a last-minute ticket to the sold-out Bonobo show here in San Francisco at the Warfield Theatre, and it was so last-minute that I unfortunately had to miss the opener El Ten Eleven, a band I've been hearing a lot of... more
