Last night, Bob Weir collapsed on stage and later had to be helped off as Furthur closed out a nine-show residency in Port Chester, NY at the historic Capital Theater. Zag’s Blog reports that Weir was fine during the first set but during the second, Weir could barely remember the words to several songs and fell to the floor at the beginning of “Unbroken Chain”, having to be helped back to a chair by crew members, where he attempted to finish the song. The rest of the band, including Phil Lesh and Joe Russo are visibly shaken as they try to play through. The video is somewhat hard to watch especially for fans. Weir was reportedly taken to an ambulance but no official updates from the band have been made available.
Before the encore, Lesh then told the audience that Weir strained his shoulder in a workout and the band played a four song encore without their lead guitarist. An odd end to Furthur’s finale where before the show the lobby’s bar was named Garcia’s in honor of the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia, which was one of his favorite venues.
Furthur are scheduled to play Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City tomorrow.
Thanks to Couch Tour for the heads up on this development.
