On Sunday night the whole Phish community was more abuzz than normal (we say that every time), but mostly because the stream from the second night at Merriweather Post Pavilion was lightyears ahead of the stream that was coming from the lawn on Saturday night. Well, also potentially due to the complete rager of a first set that opened with “First Tube”, a song they should probably open with more often to really jumpstart the energy, and an off-the-wall version of “Scent of a Mule” where the duel jam was so much more than that thanks to Jon Fishman’s new toy. This version of the song featured what would be the first we’d see of the Marimba Lumina, a MIDI controller sounding straight out of the 80’s with its textures and tones really adding a psychedelic drums-in-space edge to the song. But we really hope that’s not the last of it; it’s appearance in a mid-second-set theremin freak-out jam would just suddenly make sense. Let’s see if it comes out again on tour.
