Happy New Year!
Umphrey’s McGee – Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL
Last night was a fun New Year’s Eve for me, and I’m sure plenty of other folks had killer nights out as well. I’m still taking it easy today and I’ve got some work to do to prepare for the week, so we’ll return with some posts tomorrow.
In the meantime, feel free to sound off on how your night went in the comments. There was good stuff all over the place and we’d love to hear all the juicy details.
I know I’m a little late on these matters, but I thought I would talk about my NYE festivus.
So I journey over to Utica to catch the final installment of The Breakfast. Since it was Ronnie Spears, long-time bassist for the band, I figured the least I could do was to hit up the show and send Ronnie the send of his deserve.
Overall the show was very emotional for me, as well as many of the other fans in attendance. Wish you guys would cover more about them. I know they’re not as well-known as many other jam bands, but they definitely deserve some props from the media.
Just this last summer their keyboardist left, and now they have to deal with this. Surprisingly enough they’ve been able to sustain all these troubles and still keep the band together.
They replaced the keyboardist with Matt Oestreicher and the bassist with Chris DeAngelis. Hopefully you and some of your readers will check this band out. They won’t be disappointed.

He did play: Born To Be Wild, Radar Love, Jump, Kashmir and – with some nasty homemade effect pedal imitating a trumpet My Funny Valentine (about four times faster than Chet Baker used to sing it).

John: Yeah I’m still half-regretting passing on seeing those final Nickel Creek shows, if at all just to say that I got to experience what they did live that was actually throwback and not so progressive. Even this Billboard writeup points to how complicated this stuff is compared to his Nickel Creek work…
Hans: that’s a good alternative to a normal NYE. did he at least play anything triumphant at the turn of the new year?

I spent the early part of the night with The Punch Brothers (Chris Thile’s newish band) at the Old Town School here in Chicago.
It was a great show — Thile’s a natural performer, a virtuoso and a great stage presence — though the Brothers’ new material is a bit more progressive than the Nickel Creek tunes I love.
That’s okay. Better to look forward than back; in music and in life. Happy New Year.

Welcomes back to the music bloggers community and a belated Happy New Year! Spend NYE at home this year and at 00:00 the new guy living down the street plugged in his guitar and started banging out some great power chords. The fireworks took care off the light show.
