Toubab Krewe — who I recently tagged as one of the bands I’m excited to see for the first time at Langerado — starts its Spring tour tonight at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC. Along the the way they’ve lined up an opening slot for moe. (3/3), several nights opening for Toots & the Maytals, a stop at SXSW, and a two-night run in their hometown of Asheville, NC on 4/20 and 4/21. According to, those hometown shows will also be a celebration of a new live release, Live at the Orange Peel, featuring the band’s performance at the Asheville venue on Decmeber 23, 2006. They’re also slated for additional festival spots this Spring and Summer like Merlefest, Smilefest, and Wakarusa.

The band just recently toured Mali for a festival date, a video shoot, and to study up on the West African traditional music they have assimilated into their sound. There seems to be some debate about whether or not these guys live up to the hype, so I think I’ll reserve my judgement until I catch them live in Florida. That said, what I’ve heard is definitely groovy and quite intriguing.

Full list of tour dates after the jump…
