Yeasayer – 10.20.2007 at the Fader Sideshow []

Regardless of how close you can be to the world of emerging artists and 20 press releases in your inbox every day, there are still bands that will continue to evade your musical radar until you hear the buzz continue to swell back up. Yeasayer is officially one of those bands for me.

YEASAYER’S components are four, with each one a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter, and chanter. Founded by half of a barbershop quartet, then followed by the rhythm, YEASAYER is a tight brotherhood undisrupted by the external. Live, the four bring out the boogie, radiating heat waves and rhythms. Songs once laid to tape are constantly restructured and reworked, show to show, for a new experience.

It started only recently when a few of these new bloggers started dropping some posts on the site. That lead to us requesting some press passes for their two shows this Friday at Schubas here in Chicago, which lead to the press person kindly telling us that there’s no way that she could provide more than one pass considering the demand. Which lead to me reading the JamBase review of their recent show in San Francisco, which lead to me sampling the band and then launching the MySpace player in a new window and putting it on repeat for about 48 hours.

I guess I really like this stuff. Take a taste yourself.

These guys remind me of what Toubab Krewe did a few years back by entering the jamband scene with a great genre-mashing sort of sound. It was a little bit surf music and a lot of African influence over a solid groove section that made you want to dance and bob your head along with their songs. Yeasayer might well be an indie rock equivalent and the comparisons to how people are reacting is obvious. We like new s***, and we like it when bands understand that a live show is about reaching, reworking, and evolving on-stage into a band that people want to snatch up tickets for as quickly as possible. We all know that’s the only way that musicians will be able to make money in the foreseeable future, anyway.

They’re in the midst of a tour right now that’ll take them to Europe after they finish up here in the States; if you miss them this time around, make sure you get tickets next time around before they start playing some bigger venue than you’d want to attend.
