Furthur “Steals” A Page From Phish’s Book in Colorado 9/23/12

Furthur just capped off a three-night run at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado with some setlist shenanigans obviously inspired and in honor of Phish’s now legendary “F*** Your Face” show played just a few weeks earlier in the very same state. Furthur’s first set and a large slice of the second spelled out “STEAL YOUR FACE.” Read on for the full setlist including a rare cover of the Hank Williams song, “You Win Again.”

*Update: @HeyScottyB asked Furthur vocalist Jeff Pehrson via twitter who came up with the “Steal Your Face” sidea. The setlist was written by Furthur’s co-manager Matt Busch.

Steal Your Face is a live double album by the Grateful Dead, released in June 1976. The title derives from the lyrics of “He’s Gone”, a song that does not appear on the album. “Like I told ya, what I said, steal your face right off your head.” It was recorded in concert between October 16th and October 20th, 1974, at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom. Furthur was formed in 2009 and is led by the Dead’s Bob Weir and Phil Lesh with John Kadlecik on guitar, Jeff Chimenti on keys, and Joe Russo on drums. If nothing else, honoring Phish’s “F*** Your Face” show by spelling out their own Dead “Face” reference is an interesting way to gain some buzz. It also continues the Phish/Dead connection that has grown stronger in recent years between Phil Lesh, Trey Anastasio, Bob Weir, Mike Gordon (Move Me Brightly), Bill Kreutzmann and Jon Fishman. Furthur’s tour heads West to Washington on Tuesday.
