Leading the nominations are Sting, The Smiths, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Nine Inch Nails and Lou Reed, but it’s certainly a solid list including Green Day, Chic and N.W.A. Also receiving a nomination are The Paul Butterfield Band, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Kraftwerk, The Marvelettes, The Spinners, War, and Bill Withers.
This was the first year NIN and Green Day were eligible so hats off to them for getting the nod. To be nominated, artists must have released their first record at least 25 years prior. Lou Reed and Sting are already in the HOF as part of The Velvet Underground and The Police, respectively. Fans, like last year, will again help pick the winners by voting at RollingStone.com. Polls close on December 9th and the official nominees will be announced shortly after.
This was Phish’s (Junta, 1989) first year of eligibility but we aren’t surprised they didn’t make it in on their first go-around. Other notables left off include Pavement, Rick James, The Pixies, Boston, The Cure, King Crimson and Little Feat.
